If you’ve never been to our practice before, we can guide you there using the Hutchinson Public Library as a starting point. Here are two routes you could take:
- Go north on Main, then turn right onto 30th Ave. Right before the intersection with Lorraine St, turn right into our parking lot.
- Instead, you could go north on Main until 17th Ave and turn right onto that. Turn left onto Lorraine St, and turn into our parking lot right before the intersection with 30th Ave.
How Much Local History Do You Know?
Hutchinson, Kansas, was founded in 1871 by frontiersman Clinton “C.C.” Hutchinson, who contracted with the Santa Fe Railway to establish a town at the railway’s crossing over the Arkansas River. Known as “Temperance City” due to a unique deed restriction that prohibited the sale or gifting of alcohol, Hutchinson was incorporated as a third-class city in August 1872. This early history set the stage for a community deeply rooted in pioneering spirit and distinctive governance.

The city’s connectivity significantly improved in 1887 when the Chicago, Kansas and Nebraska Railway laid tracks from Herington through Hutchinson to Pratt, and further extensions in subsequent years connected Hutchinson to major cities like Liberal, Tucumcari, New Mexico, and El Paso, Texas. Despite the railway facing foreclosures and several ownership changes, locals still affectionately refer to it as the “Rock Island.”

In the same pivotal year of 1887, Hutchinson marked its place on the map of industrial America when local salt deposits were discovered by Ben Blanchard, a land speculator. This discovery, initially in pursuit of oil, led to salt mining becoming a major industry in Hutchinson, earning it the nickname “Salt City.”

Hutchinson has also been a cultural hub, hosting county fairs since 1873. By 1900, these events were popularly referred to as the Kansas State Fair. It wasn’t until 1913, after significant advocacy efforts at the Kansas Legislature, that Hutchinson officially gifted the land that now hosts the Kansas State Fairgrounds, making the city the permanent home of the Kansas State Fair. This enduring tradition highlights Hutchinson’s significant role in the state’s social and economic history, and it still continues today!
